James_and_the_Giant_Peach

JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, JR.

Music & Lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul
Book by Timothy Allen McDonald
Based on the book, James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach is now a musical for the whole family to enjoy! Featuring a wonderful score by the Tony and Oscar winning team of Pasek and Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, Dogfight, A Christmas Story the Musical, La La Land, Greatest Showman).

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that results in a tremendous peach and launches a journey of enormous proportions. Suddenly, James finds himself in the center of the gigantic peach, among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities, but after it falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements.

Performances: August 3rd at 7pm, August 4th at 2pm & 7pm

The Wingspan Ensemble (High School) musical will be:

Drowsy

THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

Music & Lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison
Book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar

Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another.

With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on their favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.

Performances: August 9th at 7pm, August 11th at 7pm, & August 12th at 2pm

The Wingspan Ensemble (High School) play will be:

AYLI

AS YOU LIKE IT

Written by William Shakespeare

Duke Senior has been forced into exile from the court by the usurping Duke Frederick. He takes refuge in the Forest of Arden with a band of faithful lords.

Rosalind, his daughter, is kept at court as a companion to her cousin Celia, Frederick’s daughter.

Orlando de Boys has been kept in poverty by his brother, Oliver, since his father’s death. Orlando decides to wrestle for his fortune at Frederick’s court, where he sees Rosalind and they fall in love.

The Duke banishes Rosalind, fearing that she is a threat to his rule. Celia and Touchstone accompany her to the Forest of Arden, all disguised.

On hearing of a plot by his brother to kill him, Orlando also flees to the Forest. Orlando meets Rosalind (disguised as Ganymede) and Ganymede agrees to cure Orlando of his love for Rosalind, thus making them even closer.

The forest creates a home for adventure in love, reconciliation, and self-discovery.
Through music, physical comedy, and an ensemble-driven approach, Wingspan Ensemble’s production of As You Like It will balance the timeliness of strong female-centered stories, with the timelessness of Shakespeare’s poetry.

Or put more simply… 😉

Weeks 3 & 4

It’s been a full and busy few weeks here but we didn’t want to leave our fans waiting for all of the exciting news and inside scoop 🙂

Here are some highlights from the past couple of weeks:

  • Honk shared a number in our company meeting and the Wingspan Ensemble was SO impressed with their talent and energy! Everyone is so excited to see the shows this weekend (COME SEE IT!)
  • The Wingspan Ensemble went to see Come From Away and everyone was so moved by it–what an amazing show! We also had the opportunity to engage in a talk back with the cast which was so inspiring. We also got very lucky and the real Beverley Bass was in the audience that evening and we got to meet her!!
  • Wingspan Players finished up their classes and have moved into tech week because they open ON FRIDAY! (COME SEE IT!)
  • Wingspan Ensemble finishes up their classes tomorrow and will move into their tech week Monday and first show opens on Thursday (COME SEE THEM!).
  • We will do a separate post about this because it deserves more explanation and photos but The Wingspan Players were invited to perform and attend a Make-a-Wish reveal for one of their cast-mates yesterday and it was such an incredible and special experience for everyone–we were so honored to have been asked!

COME SEE HONK THIS WEEKEND AND WINGSPAN ENSEMBLE SHOWS NEXT WEEK!

Here are our featured shout-outs for this week:

Week Two

Apologies for the delayed post, but we were just so busy!

All of the students have been learning so much in their classes–it’s so fun to walk around to them each day. I wish I could take the classes with them!

Rehearsals are definitely in full swing!

  • Honk is planning to do a stumble through of what they have so far this week–I can’t wait to see the beginnings of it come together! They are also meeting with the costume designer this Friday to start trying things on and getting a sense of the costumes they will be wearing.
  • Into the Woods has tackled some seriously hard music and are doing so beautifully! I am so impressed with what they can learn in just an hour sometimes. Seriously, Sondheim, you definitely have challenged us with this one! We can’t wait to share all of the hard work in just a few weeks!
  • Peter & the Starcatcher is devising really amazing and beautiful movement for the show and it’s coming together so well! I am amazed at how inventive they can be with some rope and a couple of trunks–it’s so magical!

Here are our featured shout-outs for this week:

“SHOUT OUT TO JADE FOR BEING AN ENDLESSLY PATIENT AND HUMBLE DANCE CAPTAIN!”

“SHOUT OUT TO JAZMIN AND SOFIA FOR MAKING AMAZING CHOREOGRAPHY FOR PETER AND THE STARCATCHER.”

We are already in full swing with all of our classes and rehearsals! Right now, the Wingspan Players are in rehearsal learning music and choreography for Honk! The Wingspan Ensemble is in classes at the moment but this afternoon will head to their first full rehearsals of Peter & the Starcatcher and Into the Woods

15 Years of Wingspan Arts

This past Monday we gathered to celebrate 15 years of Wingspan Arts and what a wonderful celebration it was! Thank you so much to everyone who attended and to those of you that supported from afar if you couldn’t make it.

We had a few really amazing guests from the Broadway community join us to perform with some of our Conservatory students and everyone did such a beautiful job. We hope to post some video of the event but in the meantime, check out some performance photos below.  To see the full Flickr album of the evening, click here.
